Dog walking weather FAQ

Is it too hot to walk my dog?

Past about 85°F, I'd shorten or skip walks for most dogs. Flat-faced breeds, thick coats, seniors, and big dogs feel the heat sooner. Don't forget the pavement: press the back of your hand on it for 7 seconds. If it's uncomfortable for you, it's too hot for paws.

When is it too cold for a walk?

Many dogs are fine down to freezing. Below 20°F is when I'd watch more closely, especially for small dogs, short coats, puppies, and seniors. Lifted paws or shivering means it's time to head inside.

How does this app know what's safe?

We look at your local weather (temperature, feels-like, humidity, wind, rain, and UV) and your dog's profile: size, coat, age, snout shape, and walking surface. Each hour gets rated Good, Caution, Short walk, or Avoid.

When is the best time to walk my dog today?

Check the hourly forecast. We highlight the best stretch in the next 12 hours so you can miss the hottest or coldest part of the day.

Is Rain or Shine free?

Yep, completely free. No account needed.

How this works

Rain or Shine turns forecast data into simple walk guidance. It is a planning tool, not a substitute for veterinary advice.

  1. We use current and hourly forecasts for temperature, feels-like, humidity, wind, rain, and UV.
  2. Your My Dog profile (size, coat, age, snout type, and walking surface) adjusts heat, cold, and storm guidance.
  3. Each hour gets a walk level—Good, Caution, Short, or Avoid—with a suggested duration.
